Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Certification Program

Certified sheriffs and deputies may apply for recertification every four years.* The requirements for recertification focus on training and professional development activities that have occurred since the applicant’s last certification award. For further details, including questions about change in status, refer to the guidebook.

Applications for initial certification or recertification will be accepted annually, beginning on October 1 and ending on December 31. Due to the labor intensive review process involved with each application, and the need to have all applications reviewed and approved by the established review deadline, application received after December 31 may not considered for review.

Completed applications and supporting documentation may be submitted via email or mailed to VCPI.

Individuals certified in the spring of 2018 will now apply for recertification in the fall of 2022.

Individuals certified in the spring of 2019 will now apply for recertification in the fall of 2023.

Individuals who have already fulfilled the hours/points requirements to apply for recertification within the original 4-year term are welcome to submit their application on the original schedule (in fall 2021 for 2018 VSIC individuals or fall 2022 for 2019 VSIC individuals).
